They showed that you can make good money." What The Matrix Inspired Hackers
After the release of the newfangled film "The Matrix:
Resurrection" in the media, mentions began to appear that it was this
franchise that set the trend for hacking over the past two decades. How the
movie has left its mark on modern cybercrime - in the material
"Gazeta.Ru".
The Matrix Reboot, for example, showed for the first time a
real hack using the existing sshnuke exploit and the nmap tool. According to
some experts, this gave rise to an interest in hacking in the society, which is
why many modern cybercriminals and information security specialists began to
study the topic.
Anton Ponomarev, director of ESET's corporate business
department, shared with Gazeta.Ru that he went to university to study
information security, including thanks to the Matrix.
“This movie helped me get interested in programming. It so
often happens that science fiction writers anticipate the future. Maybe it was
after the Wachowski painting that ESET and other vendors got their own AI.
Therefore, I can say with confidence that the "Matrix" inspired not
only "black" hackers, but also fighters against cybercrime.
Confirmation of this is the anti-hacker chip MORPHEUS or the domestic IT
platform Trinity, - said Ponomarev.
According to him, ESET experts often come across references
to The Matrix when examining software or tags of cybercriminals.
“Take, for example, the hacker Ilmar Poikans, known as NEO.
Often there are hackers or exploits with nicknames and derivatives from Cypher
(the well-known hacker Cipher0007) or Dozer, ”the expert gives examples.
He also noted that the plot of the "Matrix" can be
observed in modern hacking: artificial intelligence and cloud technologies are
fighting on the fields of information security. IT industry players strive to
reduce human involvement and replace them with machines - this adds speed,
frees up time for specialists and removes human errors.
Mikhail Kondrashin, technical director of Trend Micro in the
CIS, Mongolia and Georgia, noted that the first part of the "Matrix"
tetralogy was published at the end of the twentieth century, just at the very
end of the era of hackers in the original sense of the word.
“At that time, a hacker was considered a highly qualified
specialist who was looking for unobvious properties of information systems and
using them for his own purposes. The main motivation for hackers of that era
was popularity among a narrow circle of “colleagues”.
But already in the film itself, it was shown that you can
make good money by developing malicious code and other actions. This
anticipated the vector of information security development for the next twenty
years.
Today's cybercriminals do not seek fame and notoriety. They
try to remain anonymous even to their colleagues in the shop. Their goal is
money, and the money is huge, ”said Kondrashin.
Daniil Shepovalov (danya.ru), an IT expert and a regular
columnist for the Hacker magazine in 1999-2002, is sure that the image of Neo
had a huge impact on young technologists of that time.
“A typical geek with red eyes, for whom a room a little
larger than a bed is enough, and whose whole life is spent behind the screen,
suddenly becomes the most important thing and smashes reality into fragments of
green hieroglyphs,” the expert explained.
However, modern hackers differ significantly both from the
characters of the film of the same name and from the specialists of that time,
says Alexander Dvoryansky, Director of Strategic Communications at Infosecurity
(Softline Group).
“At the end of the 90s, the concept of“ hacker ”was like a
title, sounded proudly and the purpose of the work was practically scientific
interest, an opportunity to demonstrate one's skills and competencies. For the
modern attacker, money is the most important thing. Previously, hackers were
mostly loners and were often driven by sports interests.
Now their activities have turned into a full-fledged
criminal community, well-financed, resource-supported, and at the moment they
pose a significant threat to the whole world.
Therefore, the image presented in the film "The
Matrix" does not correspond to a modern hacker in any way, "the
expert concluded
